Description
The Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration of the Saviour) Cathedral was built as the city’s principal church. The neoclassical building was located on a city square and served as the focal point of several streets. Its interior and exterior were richly decorated. After the original church was destroyed in 1936, it was rebuilt in the late 20th century. As of 2026, thanks to funding from Italy and coordination by UNESCO, the cathedral building has been almost completely restored. The work has included reinforcing the structure with reinforced concrete, replacing the roof, and installing a new heating system.
