Okhtyrka City Museum of Local Lore

Description: The two-storey brick mansion was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in a Classical style with elements of Eclecticism. It was originally constructed as a private residence for one of the wealthy merchant families of Okhtyrka. The façade was distinguished by formal symmetry, tall windows, and ornate stucco decoration. In the early 1950s, the building was converted into a museum. The Okhtyrka Museum became the first museum in Ukraine to be hit by a targeted air strike during the full-scale war. The explosion completely destroyed the roof, destroyed the upper-floor slabs, obliterated the façade stucco, and blew out all the panoramic windows and their frames. The most valuable part of the collection was recovered intact from beneath the debris. Restoration of the building is planned.
