Church of the Blessed Virgin of the Sign (Svyato-Znamenska)

Description: The building was originally constructed as the private family church of the wealthy Gusev merchant family. Its architecture was unique within the Dnipro region. The unknown architect employed a rare construction technique dating from the 12th and 13th centuries: the church dome was constructed using special clay resonators – hollow vessels – embedded within the structure. This made the dome unusually light and gave the church interior exceptionally resonant acoustics. From 2022 onwards, the historic windows were repeatedly blown out by nearby strikes and blast waves. The centuries-old brickwork was heavily damaged by shrapnel, while the roof and decorative façade elements were also partially damaged.
