Joseph Lev House on Zhylianska Street
Description: This residential building on Zhylianska Street was built by the Jewish merchant Joseph Lev. The building’s architecture is an example of the popular brick style from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This building was the first historic building in Kyiv to be damaged in a Russian attack. Despite a petition from city residents calling for restoration, the city authorities are unwilling to restore it. As of 2026, the building has not even been fully conserved. Part of the building remains exposed to the elements, leading to the gradual deterioration of the surviving walls. Restoration remains stalled due to the authorities’ reluctance to restore the building.
