Description: The building was originally constructed to house the first major financial centre in south-eastern Ukraine — the Mariupol branch of the State Bank. Its architecture is dominated by Neo-Renaissance forms. In 2019, the city purchased the historic building and relocated the library there. In the spring of 2022, during the battle for Mariupol, the building sustained catastrophic damage as a result of Russian shelling. Fire destroyed the roof, intermediate floors, and the library’s entire collection of around one hundred thousand books. The occupation authorities later carried out restoration work on the building.
